Is it any wonder that Hugh Jackman has captured the hearts of people everywhere? The X-Men hunk made yet another appearance in front of the camera recently—but you won't see this one on the big screen. Jackman makes a cameo appearance in a video recorded by Australian man Kristian Anderson for his wife Rachel. Anderson recorded the video to wish Rachel a happy birthday—and to thank her for sticking with him through his treatment for bowel cancer. Check out the video below to see Jackman's very special appearance (which occurs at about the 2:05 mark). How far through the video did you...

The last time we had a check-in on Selma, the civil rights picture director Lee Daniels spent much of 2010 preparing to make, financing was an issue. The director had a script and a cast (Hugh Jackman, Liam Neeson, David Oyelowo, Robert De Niro, Cedric the Entertainer) but money was a problem. Then he was signed to rewrite and direct The Butler, and it seemed like Selma might go away. But, as it turns out, the financing for Selma is now in place. And so, having two civil rights-themed films set up, Daniels is faced with a choice: Selma, or The Butler? Daniels told BlackVoices (via Reuters) that money was never an issue, and that Selma is now set to go, should be want to do it: The script is in, the actors are there, some of them are stars. The money is there, it's just a matter of whether I'm able to ...

What is this madness? In the first of three small updates on possible directorial hires for big studio tentpole films, there's a report that Darren Aronofsky has joined the race to direct Wolverine 2. David Slade is still looking like the frontrunner, while Red director Robert Schwentke has dropped out. More on that after the break, along with minor updates on possible directors for Deadpool and the Clash of the Titans sequel. Deadline talks about all three films and notes that, no surprise, the possibility of Darren Aronofsky for Wolverine 2 comes from Hugh Jackman. Aronofsky directed Jackman in The Fountain, and the actor (as we've previously noted) has a lot of control over who directs the Wolverine sequel. He's met with David Slade, and has been talking with Aronofsky. I can see why Jackman would want Aronofsky, but beyond the guarantee of a paycheck I can't see why the director would want ...

Field Smith is currently in post on Butter , starring Hugh Jackman and Jennifer Garner, for The Weinstein Company.

Just recently our Casting Tidbits let you know that Hugh Jackman had dropped out of Avon Men in favor of getting back in hardcore shape for Fox's sequel to Wolverine. Though we know Christopher McQuarrie was scripting the spin-off sequel, a director still hasn't been chosen, but Vulture just got a scoop on who'll be sitting in the director's chair. Apparently the choice has been narrowed down to Robert Schwentke (The Time Traveler's Wife, RED) and David Slade (Twilight: Eclipse, Hard Candy), but an inside source claims the latter will be the top pick with Jackman making the final call after meeting with both of them next week. Schwentke has a bit more variety in his resume, but Slade's cinematic material makes him a slightly better choice. With consistently darker material like Hard Candy and 30 Days of Night (which also had plenty of action), that's probably just what this Wolverine ...

Fox's sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine is moving forward, and the studio is reportedly on the cusp of hiring a director. The shortlist is very short, indeed: David Slade (Hard Candy, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) is said to be the frontrunner, with Robert Schwentke (Red) as a backup option. Vulture says the decision will now come down to a choice made by star Hugh Jackman. The studio has reportedly approved both men as director, and next week Jackman will meet with them, after which a decision will be made. Vulture quotes a source saying that David Slade will most likely get the job. Whoever gets the gig will direct Jackman in a story based in part on the classic Wolverine mini-series by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller. The story sees Wolverine in Japan, where he falls for a Japanese woman who has been promised to someone else. Conflict ensues with her ...

Unfortunately for David Slade, a nice chunk of people actually associate him with "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" than his previous directed work like "Hard Candy" and "30 Days of Night". Well, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2" could be the latest notch on his resume if he ends up grabbing the job. It's not entirely too simple to take, especially since Robert Schwentke also has his eyes set on the directing gig. Schwentke also has a short but cool resume that includes "The Time Traveler's Wife" and the upcoming Summit Entertainment film "Red". Word has it that Slade is a shoe in for the job, but minds change so fast in this town that it wouldn't surprise me if someone else got the slot."Wolverine 2" apparently revolves around Logan (Hugh Jackman) still out and about in Japan who begins a relationship with a woman who's hand in marriage is already promised for another guy. Then our favorite Wolvie has to duke it out with her father and samurai sword wielding brothers. When reading this synopsis, for some reason my mind trails over to Wolverine's brief romance with Mariko Yashida back in the comics when Madeline Pryor was first shacking up with Scott Summers.  It could be taken from there, but we'll see.Out of the two, would you rather have David Slade or Robert Schwentke directing "Wolverine 2"?Source: Vulture

Recently, I was at a bar with a single friend when we were approached by two pretty affable, hipster-seeming guys. I don't use that term negatively...I love hipsters! But you know what I mean: We were in Williamsburg, they were dressed in the appropriate ripped t-shirt and whatever-shorts manner, and exuded a vibe that clearly said "We play in a band, or something." One of the guys claimed to be a coffee barista, and his roommate was in finance. Already, I sensed something was up: How can a coffee-slinger afford to live with somebody who works on Wall Street? A trust fund? Nope: As it turned out, this guy not only owned/managed the well-known cafe he purported to just work at, and made thousands of dollars on the side by selling his paintings and giving drawing lessons to Hugh Jackman . EXCLUSIVE : Seed Productions partners Hugh Jackman and John Palermo are splitting up. Jackman has decided to focus on his acting career, while Palermo has made a new deal at 20th Century Fox, where Seed was based.  The new deal will run through end of 2011. Allan Mandelbaum will stay with Palermo as development veep. Palermo was Jackman’s assistant for two years before they formed the company and set it at Fox four years ago. They produced X-Men: The Last Stand, Deception and X-Men Origins: Wolverine . The company is also producing Avon Man , the Kevin Lima-directed film that Jackman dropped out of early this week, and Drive , a drama that Odd Lot Entertainment is financing. Jackman once planned to star in that film, an adaptation of the James Sallis novel. Ryan Gosling is now starring as a Hollywood stunt driver who moonlights as a wheelman and discovers there is a contract on his head. Nicholas Winding Refn is directing. Production begins in September, with Palermo and Marc Platt producing. Palermo said he and Jackman will continue working together on projects they set up together. That includes the Wolverine sequel they are producing with Lauren Shuler Donner that is gearing up for an early 2011 production start in Japan, with the studio narrowing its list of directors. Chris McQuarrie wrote that screenplay. Jackman and Palermo also remain partners on Barnum , the original musical that ... Read More »

Here's a shock: Hugh Jackman has dropped out of the film Avon Man. The comedy, which is perpetually likened to The Full Monty, was supposed to shoot this past spring, but is now set to shoot in October. Now it loses Jackman, who remains a producer on the film. Not like he's washing his hands of it, but this is exactly the sort of movie Jackman doesn't need to do. If the setup sounded more promising it might be the sort of thing that would be fun to see him make, but things being what they are, this is probably a good choice. Deadline's info is that this will make way for the Wolverine sequel, for which Jackman will spend the fall training. (He put on extra weight for Real Steel.) EXCLUSIVE : Hugh Jackman won't be knocking on doors this fall in the lead role of Avon Man, the 20th Century Fox comedy that Kevin Lima will direct. I'm told that Jackman has dropped out as the star. That's going to come as pretty good news for superhero fans because  Jackman will spend the late fall getting in killer shape to reprise his role as Logan in a sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine. That film is being scripted by Christopher McQuarrie and tells a samurai story set in Japan. There is no director, but Jackman's move means that Fox is getting the film ready for production next year. Jackman's road to six-pack abs could still include a detour to Selma , where he would play sheriff Jim Clark, whose arrest of Martin Luther King Jr. is catalyst for the plot of the Lee Daniels-directed Civil Rights drama which, after a series of fits and starts, appears poised to gather its financing through The Weinstein Company and Pathe and the financier Skyline Pictures. Jackman gained 30 pounds to play the role in the spring, then had to lose the weight for Real Steel . Will he strap on the feedbag again and then have to lose it to play Logan? Jackman won't be far away from Avon Man , because he is a producer on the comedy with his Seed Productions partner John Palermo and Krasnoff Foster’s Gary Forster. There's competitive rock paper scissors and arm wrestling, but what about butter carving? It's a battle of who's best with the knife in Jim Field Smith's newest comedy "Butter". The cast of the cholesterol-drowning comedy includes Jennifer Garner, Hugh Jackman, Olivia Wilde, Ashley Greene, Alicia Silverstone and Ty Burrell.A comedy set in the Midwest U.S., where an adopted girl discovers her talent for butter carving and finds herself pitted against an ambitious local woman in their town's annual contest. We've talked a lot about the casting for Butter, the Black List script by Jason Micallef that Jim Field Smith directed starring Jennifer Garner, Hugh Jackman, Ty Burrell, Rob Corddry, Ashley Greene, Olivia Wilde, Alicia Silverstone and Yara Shahidi. The film takes place in Iowa among an interrelated group of people, with championship butter carving being the event that brings them all together. But the film is also a political satire, which makes it a much more interesting prospect. Now there's a five-minute clip of interviews, footage and behind the scenes video that will give you a taste of what the film offers. We've seen quite an impressive cast come together for the satirical comedy Butter, a script that made the '08 Black List, about a young orphan girl who, after being adopted by a Midwestern family, discovers that she has an incredible talent for butter-carving. Young actress Yara Shahidi plays the orphan who finds herself against the ambitious wife (Jennifer Garner) of the retired reigning champion (Ty Burrell) in a town's annual butter-sculpting contest. Entertainment Tonight (via The Playlist) has a sneak peak at the film complete with interviews and a few scenes with Garner, Hugh Jackman, Olivia Wilde and more. A lot of positive feedback flooded out when everyone read up last week that popular director Guillermo del Toro would be taking on "At the Mountains of Madness". We've been guessing for awhile as to what Del Toro would be directing next, but wouldn't it be weird to find out that he was going to almost take on a Tom Cruise project? Even more so, that Tom Cruise project Del Toro could've been on was another telling of the popular fictionalized vampire hunter Van Helsing.Yes, Cruise would have produced and possibly starred in the strange re-telling of the character Van Helsing. How would it have been different? Who knows, especially now that Del Toro is detached from the production. The Universal Pictures project is now floating around to see if somebody else will take up the directing mantle and help get this off the ground. The last Van Helsing movie that hit the mainstream was the infamous Hugh Jackman starring CGI-disaster. Then again, I know some people who totally dig that version of "Van Helsing" so everyone has a different opinion. The first film that gets Richard Branson's Virgin Produced film shingle off the tarmac--it was innocuously mentioned as an untitled Peter Farrelly film in the announcement of Branson's joint venture with Ryan Kavanaugh's Relativity--has a bigger concentration of first class cabin-caliber actors than any under-$8 million film I can remember. And the cast is still growing. Deadline was first to reveal the Kentucky Fried Movie -style laffer when Kavanaugh replaced Overture Films as financier and the film started production. They had a good cast then, but the filmmakers keep bolstering by showing prospective talent the raucous segments shot so far, especially the Farrelly-directed seg with Hugh Jackman and Kate Winslet that is especially outrageous and R-rated. Aside from Jackman and Winslet, the cast now includes Richard Gere, Anton Yelchin, Gerard Butler, Naomi Watts, Anna Faris, Johnny Knoxville, Julianne Moore, Liev Schreiber, Elizabeth Banks, Kristen Bell, Kate Bosworth, Josh Duhamel, Justin Long, Seann William Scott, Emma Stone, Jack McBrayer, Chloe Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Uma Thurman. 14 segments are in the can, with 5 to go. There's quite a few children's books that we all went through while we were growing up. One of those, at least for myself, was "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day". You would figure after the ridiculous amount of success over Phil Lord and Chris Miller's "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" that others would try to duplicate that right away.   Twentieth Century Fox is combining their power to go and bring "Alexander" to the big screen with Shawn Levy's 21 Laps company attached. Unfortunately the word at the moment is that Levy will not be directing "Alexander", but that's a big maybe not. The story, being written for the big screen by Rob Lieber, sets itself on a group of family members who are each equally having a pretty horrible day.   Ever since Lord and Miller did a wonderful job with "Cloudy", there's a lot more optimism from many people including myself in regards to children's books being made into feature films. Last year was particularly great, mainly because "Cloudy" and "Where the Wild Things Are" were really good. Levy is currently in the middle of filming "Real Steel" with the super buff and multi-talented Hugh Jackman.
