We already know and are very excited that the next project from Guillermo del Toro is the long-gestating adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's novella At the Mountain of Madness which is being produced by James Cameron and shot in 3D. Though production isn't expected to begin until May of 2011, apparently Universal and del Toro are already in the midst of searching for their cast. Collider reports that the studio would like James McAvoy to lead the film while del Toro is much more interested in bringing Tom Cruise on board. In addition, Chris Pine is also being considered as a potential candidate for del Toro's new passion project.
While Chris Pine has quite a future slate already lined up like the forthcoming Star Trek sequel, the action comedy This Means War, the Jack Ryan franchise reboot Moscow and The Art of Making Money with D.J. Caruso, the other two aforementioned actors ...

This report is kind of thin right now, but Collider says that it has sources saying there are conflicting desires for the leading man of Guillermo del Toro's adaptation of the H.P. Lovecraft novel At the Mountains of Madness. The site's report has it that Universal wants James McAvoy (who headed up the studio's film Wanted) to star, while Guillermo del Toro wants Tom Cruise.
We're assuming now that the lead roles is geologist William Dyer, of Miskatonic University. He narrates the original novella (going from memory here) in which Dyer and associates travel to Antarctica to investigate the disappearance of a research team. Turns out the team had uncovered remains of fourteen unusual life forms, some of which were in much better condition than others. Arriving at the destroyed camp, Dyer finds some of those life forms gone, and eventually finds and explores an ancient city that was once home ...

It's not easy for an art-house film to get moviegoers polarized, certainly not on aesthetic grounds. But before it has really even started to roll out on the festival circuit, Darren Aronofsky's "Black Swan" has begun to do just that. The reaction last month to the trailer for the ballet world-set supernatural character drama -- which plays up the horror elements a bit more than perhaps the film does -- already generated reaction of "this looks amazing" to "this looks extremely bizarre" and gave you the immediate sense this was not a movie that would pass quietly. At the Venice...

I know we've written about Gareth Edwards' Monsters quite a bit over the last few months, but please bear with us as we continue to cover all the cool stuff that Magnolia is putting out, because it's one of my favorite indie discoveries of this year and I'm all for covering everything. Although we've already seen that gorgeous official poster for the low budget sci-fi film, Vulture just debuted yet another "alternative" poster design that is just as unique, just as original, and just as awesome. We also already got a glimpse in the latest trailer, but those tentacles in the right eye are from the aliens in this. And here's a new positive review. Check this out!
Monsters is written, produced and directed by Gareth Edwards, a big up-and-coming filmmaker who shot this on a shoestring budget in Mexico and did all of the visual effects on his own computer. ...

One of the many things that makes the Telluride Film Festival more interesting than most other film festivals is that it doesn't announce the line-up until 24 hours before the film festival begins. And even then the festival usually packs a few unannounced surprise premieres. This year's line-up is kind of a let down. A large portion of the 24 feature films were selected from this year's Cannes Film Festival, which was filled with disappointment. The Cannes selections include Mike Leigh's Another Year, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Biutiful (which I did like quite a bit), Tom Hooper's The King's Speech, Xavier Beauvois' Of Gods and Men, Charles Ferguson's documentary Inside Job, Stephen Frears' Tamara Drewe and the 11-language six-hour biopic of legendary terrorist Carlos.
The high profile premieres of the fest seem to be Peter Weir's war drama The Way Back, and Mark Romanek's Never Let Me Go, which I'm very excited ...

We don't post a lot of clips these days. Mostly because I (and Peter, I believe) try to avoid watching them, so as not to spoil films any more than necessary before we see them. So why am I posting this clip from Let Me In? Because it's part of what we were shown at Comic Con this year, and was very helpful in convincing me that this is a movie to be taken seriously. Hopefully some of you might feel the same.
In addition, there's a really nice new French poster for the film, which you can see after the break.
The clip was initially revealed through small viral puzzle on the film's official site. In the clip, we see Richard Jenkins as the caretaker of the vampiric girl Abby (Chloe Moretz) as he tries to gather food for his charge. This is a scene that takes place a bit into ...

The first set spy photo has emerged to show Ian McShane in character as Blackbeard in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and to complement that shot there's a first-look shot from another ocean-going adventure. Our second groups of set pics show Rhianna in costume for Peter Berg's Battleship. Larger images and more info after the jump.
First up: Ian McShane in On Stranger Tides. Why is he first? Because he's bloody Ian McShane. I'm praying that his Blackbeard will be something like Deadwood's Swearingen with a bigger beard and broader swagger. After the bloated, hastily written mess of the last Pirates film I didn't think there was much that could get me back on board, but casting McShane is a great move. If this fourth Pirates film takes even slight advantage of the verbal dexterity the actor displayed on Deadwood, the interactions between he and Johnny Depp could ...

Public Enemies screenwriter Ronan Bennett is taking on a potentially loaded project. He'll adapt Dean King's book Skeletons on the Zahara, which tells the story of twelve American sailors who into submit themselves into slavery in Africa after being shipwrecked, hoping that as slaves they'll be given enough sustenance to survive.
The story is based in part on the account of the ordeal written by one of the men, Captain James Riley. Riley's account told of an arduous trek across the Sahara Desert and subsequently being taken captive and enslaved. (Abraham Lincoln reportedly said Riley's book was one of the books that most influenced him.)
It's classic adventure stuff, made rather more compelling by being true. There are excellent parts in here for a couple of actors -- certainly an American to play Captain Riley, and then the North African merchant Hamet, who buys the men out of slavery and takes pity ...

Cinema has entered a new dawn. It arrived a while ago, actually, and you may not have even noticed.
I'm not referring to the recent surfeit of remakes, sequels and adaptations, or the rebirth and subsequent profusion of superhero movies, or even the resurgence of 3D. No, I'm talking about the evolution of a burgeoning subgenre in cinema: Meta-films, aka movies about movies. Whether you've seen it or not, these self-reflective satires, parodies and homages have become a recurring staple of the aughts, and slowly but surely, the landscape of modern cinema is changing because of them.
For evidence of this, look no further than six of the major releases of the past month. We've got: The Expendables, a tribute to the testosterone-filled macho-men movies of the '80s; Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, an all-encompassing satirization of movie tropes going as far back as the Shaw brothers films of the '70s; Piranha ...
